Georgia/South Carolina
Since Tammi was pregnant and
couldn't do anything too strenuous,
we opted for a grown-up vacation
that did not involve a whole lot of
activity.

We drove to Savannah, GA and
worked our way up to Charleston and
Myrtle Beach, SC.
Savannah, GA is just beautiful.  There
aren't enough words to describe the
Historic District.

It is, however, surrounded on three
sides by ghettoes.  The fourth side is
a river, so you pretty much have to go
through a rough area to get to the
good stuff.  Totally worth it, though.
Our tour guide turned out to be Jimmy
Carter's niece.  She said Savannah is
called "The City That Walks On It's
Dead" because there are people
buried everywhere that the city lost
track of and started building roads
and sidewalks over.

Between that, slavery, duels, and
criminal hangings (you can still see
the rope marks on trees used 150
years ago), Savannah is a VERY
haunted city.  Every building has a
ghost.
This was on a dinner cruise in
Savannah.  It was 100 degrees with
90-100% humidity every day.  It was
brutal just moving around.
The architecture in
Savannah is just
incredible.  There is a
committee that decides
if a new building can be
erected and exactly
what it can look like.

There were three fires
each about 50 years
apart, each destroying
half the city.  Each time
they would rebuild in the
style of the time.

You get one house in
1700's style next to one
in early 20th century
next to another from the
1850's.
Charleston, SC was almost
disappointing  - if you are familiar with
New Jersey, the downtown area is
basically Westfield: a whole bunch of
hoity-toity stores that we couldn't have
cared less about.

But then we got down to the Battery,
and that's where the beauty is.
